Upper Peninsula’s largest university enrolls 9,000 undergraduate students a year. The school’s primary focus in the early 1900s was teacher training and education, but eventually expanded into the College of Arts and Sciences, Walker L. Northern Michigan University is home to the Superior Dome, the largest wooden dome in the world. The Wildcat Marching Band and football team reside here, in addition to campus and community events. The geodesic dome has a diameter of 536 feet and the dome uses an artificial retractable turf field. 781 Douglas Fir beams were used to construct the dome. It regularly seats 8,000 but can sit 16,000 if arranged so.
